Amy's Story

Amy was first diagnosed with Germinoma or in simple terms, a brain tumor, in July of 1991, when she was 11 years old. She underwent brain surgery and radiation at the University of Washington in Seattle. After a year of hospital visits and aggressive treatments, she went into remission for 17 years. The peculiar part about her illness is, in her small town, Onalaska, Washington, two other girls about her age were also diagnosed with brain tumors within one year. Doctors, scientists, and researchers all came to the town to try to find out what caused this cluster of brain tumors, but left unsuccessful in their efforts. Amy and the other girls even went on a local talk show to tell their stories and perhaps rally more support, but even till this day, no one has been able to find an answer.

Now, 17 years later, this July, Amy was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a brain stem tumor. Doctors explained that the tumor was inoperable and that her condition was fatal. Amy's decision was to decline treatment and to live life to its fullest, spend as much time with family as possible, and make the best memories she could during the time God gave her. She tackled each day without complaint and with all the bravery in the world. Although we expected to have 3 to 6 months with Amy, she passed in her sleep early this morning, August 21st, just two days after her trip to California. We did not expect her to leave us so soon, but she stayed long enough to say her goodbyes to the people that loved her, and for that, we are all eternally grateful.

Entertaining Amy

While Amy was in California, the whole family gathered together to spend time with her and to make it the most memorable experience possible. Whether it was going to Disneyland, Market Night, Sea World, Knott's Berry farm, church or making her a big BBQ and a Taco Tuesday night, everyone was willing to pitch in. It was a time to be surrounded by family to share many laughs and good food together. Although Amy's health deteriorated quickly while she was here, not once did she complain. Instead, she watched, listened and took in all the love that surrounded her. We were all amazed at her bravery and her unfaltering faith she had in God. In fact, her faith was so strong, that she promised her Aunt Ruth that she would meet her in heaven someday. It didn't surprise us that as Amy hugged her Aunt goodbye at the airport on Tuesday, she grinned, quietly whispered, "Love you" and pointed to the sky.

It's true we will miss Amy terribly, but there's a lot we can learn from our time with her. Family is important, reach out to those who are hurting, leave selfishness at the door, cherish the laughter God gives you, but most of all, have a relationship with God and live with brave determination; after all, even as she looks at us from heaven, we will always and forever be entertaining Amy.

Amy's Disease Information

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)

A Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a tumor located in the pons (middle) of the brain stem. The brain stem is the bottom most portion of the brain, connecting the cerebrum with the spinal cord. The majority of brain stem tumors occur in the pons (middle brain stem) and are diffusely infiltrating, (they grow amidst the nerves), and therefore are not able to be surgically removed. Glioma is a general name for any tumor that arises from the supportive tissue called glia, which help keep the neurons, ("thinking cells") in place and functioning well. The brain stem contains all of the "wires" converging from the brain to the spinal cord as well as important structures involved in eye movements, face and throat muscle control and sensation.

The Latest Greatest

Although Amy has been quite sleepy the last few days, yesterday we made it to Knott's Berry Farm in the afternoon. We arrived around 4:30, but still had plenty of time to laugh and be silly. Amy even made it on the log ride, which is her favorite attraction in the park. Our new motto is, "What Amy wants, Amy gets." As proof of our commitment to this motto, just check out our pic! Is it just me or does my uncle Paul (far right) look seriously scary?

As for Saturday, Amy's Team California Day was a giant sized gathering complete with tons of family, food, and laughter. In fact, it was so much fun that the party didn't really end until 9 PM. A huge thanks to all the family and friends that came and brought food to the house in support of Amy.

Look for more updates and Amy's complete story on her battle with cancer coming soon.

Amy's Team Day-California

Hey there it's me again. Today is a special day. It's the official Amy's Team-California Day! My family planned a big potluck/BBQ/Swim party. Everyone is coming to visit me and I'm looking forward to another great day.

My first few days here, I was quite sleepy from some medicine I was taking. Now that we've adjusted it, I'm up and running. On Thursday, I went swimming with my cousins and my dad. It was a good time, but I'm not sure my mom appreciated when I soaked her with the water hose. We all had a good laugh about it, so I'm sure she's not mad about it...anymore.

After relaxing in the California sunshine I headed to Market Night in Redlands with my cousins Leah and Kaleen. We walked up and down the street and checked out the vendors and sampled all the fruit. At one point, Leah and Kaleen tried to convince me to get a tattoo, but I resisted for the time being. Instead, we settled for some fresh Kettle Corn. As for yesterday, Aunt Vicky came to visit and had me laughing with stories about my Uncle Mike. Then the whole family piled in a bunch of cars and headed to Lucy's Mexican Food for dinner. Not only did I have a good dinner, but I came home with some bags of Bunuelos (cinnamon crisps). Yum!

Now for a funny story...

The day we got here, we were at Wal Mart when I spotted a very nice lady walking by with tattoos on her _____. Well let's just say, in an inappropriate place. For the purposes of keeping this blog G rated, we'll use the term "cleavage". No joke, two big stars right there on each side of her..."cleavage". My response to seeing this spectacle was, "Wow, that's attractive. I'm gonna get me some of those!" This of course had my cousin's Heath, Tina, Leah, and Kaleen crackin' up in the store. As a result of that Wal Mart incident, everyone keeps talking about the lady with the cleavage tattoos. Even better, yesterday, my aunt Ruth decided to entertain me by putting on two temporary tattoos. Hilarious! When she wants to make me laugh, she walks by and flashes them at me. Oh my gosh, she gets me laughing all over again! She might be a nut, but boy she'll do anything to make me happy.

I'll write again soon.

Love,

Amy

I'm in California Baby!

I just arrived in CA safe and sound. Other than the airline losing my wheelchair (no joke), we made it with no problems. Right when I climbed into the truck, I was greeted by Aunt Ruthie's tasty burritos! Thank goodness she sent some food, because getting up at 4 AM to catch a flight can sure make a girl hungry. After the hour and a half ride, we made it to Aunt Ruth's and Uncle Mike's house in San Bernardino. I was excited to see that all my little cousins made me welcome signs and hung them on the garage. Everyone was waiting for me in the driveway and smothered me with lots of hugs and kisses! Once I made it inside, I opened some presents that were sent from my great cousin Little Dottie, Oscar and their family. In the big blue gift bag was a little blue angel necklace, a monkey (sadly, not a real one-he he) and a gift card for my Disneyland trip. Sweet! My Aunt Ruth also made me a photo album of all my nieces from Washington so I have their pictures to look at while I'm away. Right now, I'm just relaxing in my Uncle's favorite lounge chair (yes, he gave it up for me) and talking to the family. I can tell already, this is going to be one great trip! I'll write about my adventures again soon.

With all my love,

Amy

Amy's Visit With All of Her Nieces!

Amy waited up extra late last night just to see her nieces. She left for California today and wanted to say good bye before she left for 2 weeks. She had a great time visiting and posing for pictures! She kept telling them to sit on her lap for the pictures. These girls are what I believe Amy really lives for. She has a very special connection with all of the girls.

Smash Mouth

Here we are at the Smashmouth concert in Ephrata. Me and my brother Paul went to school with their manager Eric Newstrand. Smashmouth dedicated a song to Amy during their concert. "We are praying for you Amy, take care of yourself girl!!" Was yelled during the concert. Amy didn't get to hear this because she was tired and had to go home early. I will find this concert on video so she can hear it!!! I will, I will!!
